Tentacle-based power and protection

Keep your computers and electrical devices secure in style! The PowerSquid by Flexity is a flexible stylish solution to your power problems. The curvilinear design adds a modern sleek face to a normally overlooked part of the office landscape. Features a 360-degree rotating head that allows it to plug into the most narrow areas.

The ‘Squid also solves one of the most annoying issues with the standard power strip: large power adapters that block other outlets. If that isn’t reason enough to get one, then we don’t know how we can possibly convince you otherwise.

If you’re still not drinking the Kool-aid on the PowerSquid yet, then take someone else’s word for it. Jean Aw, founder of Notcot and yummy Tastespotting.com, couldn’t agree with us more. Here’s what she has to say on her new pet fish.

The PowerSquid has flexible rubber tentacles of different lengths so I can plug in all my gadgets – even those with unwieldy power sources – in one location. Each tentacle is three-pronged so devices lie flat, and the mouse-shaped power source easily tucks in the shelf next to my desk. I’m so glad that staying connected no longer means having to rearrange my office.

Even if you’re allergic to shellfish, we think in this case, you’ll only break out in a rash when the PowerSquid is taken away from you. This one is definitely a keeper.

The Swiss Army Knife for Globe-Trotting High-Tech Execs

As multi-purpose devices continue to become more prevalent in our world, we’ll occasionally update you on some of the hotter items available. Today’s post is such a case, with the i-mate K-JAM mobile phone/Pocket PC/web cam/Skype receiver. This multi-faceted jewel is ideal for the ultimate in multi-tasking. It’s so multi-functional it has 3 different names!

Okay, so the several different names don’t have to do with how useful the thing is. They’re all essentially the same phone rebranded by a few different companies. In any case, this is a top-notch PDA phone. Dai-Kyu Kim, CEO of Zapr gives us a good rundown of the i-mate’s twin, the HTC Wizard:

I travel frequently to Korea and Japan, and I quickly grew tired of dealing with the rental and prepaid cell phones I used for communicating while overseas. The HTC is actually a tiny computer with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 180-degree swivel touchscreen, a “qwerty” keyboard, 128MB of ROM, 64MB of SDRAM, and a 520-MHz processor. I now get my e-mail instantly, and the HTC Wizard quickly transmits text and video messages. This phone is an international superstar, and it’s worth every penny.

The K-JAM comes with the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, and is packed with all the mobile office applications needed to make working on the road fun and simple. As most PDA phones go, they certainly don’t give these things away for free, but the “you get what you pay for” motto stays true with the K-JAM. You’re going to pay a lot, and get a lot out of it. Basically, if this beefy little phone doesn’t have enough horsepower for you, you’re likely to be holding a full-blown laptop up to you head the next time you get call.

A Booster Seat to Drop the Heat

In case you didn’t know already, heat is the #1 nemesis for computers. All those fragile components crunching away on data and graphics really get the temperature rising. (Wouldn’t you be really warm after doing a few hundred million math problems?!) The heat issue is only magnified for laptops. All the extra space for ventilation is removed, fans are smaller, everything is shrunk! To top (or bottom, as it may be) it off, the only place to get a decent size fan running on a laptop is on its underside. That way, all the hot air inside computer can be blown out… onto the table or desk a few millimeters away. Sounds useful, doesn’t it? Well, the Powerlift Laptop Stand offers a way to get some additional heat-dissipating distance for your laptop.

Even though it adds less than an extra inch of space between your laptop and its resting spot, there will be a significant improvement (whether your notice it or not) in how much heat your laptop expels. Basically, it comes down to air flow and the Powerlift greatly enhances how much more air can move around underneath your computer. Overheating should no longer be a concern while your machines chugs along on the 8 monster spreadsheets you have opened up. Jason Fields, from Idealab and snap.com, got a few Powerlifts for himself:

The Powerlift is a simple, minimal solution to overheating portables. It’s hinged in the middle, making it ultracompact when closed; when it’s open, the rubber pads on its ends provide ample clearance between your computer and the table surface. Best of all, the Powerlift is cheap, meaning that I can buy several and never worry about losing one while traveling. The company also makes other interesting products, including a wall folio, an iPod case, and a thick felt laptop sleeve that I can’t wait to get my hands on.

Those crazy Swiss are always up to something. Bounce on over to the netwer.ch website to order your own Powerlift, or even a set of them. Make sure to check out what else they have to offer for those who are looking for both form and function.
